Charlotte, N.C. — A pet proprietor is sharing how a coyote killed her beloved cat in an effort to warn her fellow pet house owners.
WCNC Charlotte experiences Emily Ostendorff’s 14-year-old black and white cat, Nigel, was sitting on the entrance porch round 5:45 p.m. final Tuesday when a coyote crossed the entrance yard.
Ostendorff’s residence video digicam captured the second Nigel ran after the coyote.
The coyote killed Nigel earlier than it scurried again to the woods.
Falyn Owens, an extension wildlife biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Assets Fee, mentioned teenage coyotes strike off by themselves in autumn.
Owens mentioned they prey on small pets, however they’re afraid of people.
“In the event you see a coyote in your neighborhood, scare it off,” Owens mentioned. “That teaches them to be afraid of us.”
Biologists say coyotes are common across North Carolina, even in residential areas, although they are often excellent at not being seen.
“Listening to or seeing one is not any trigger for shock or alarm,” mentioned Owens.
